Discover Real Communities: Building Inclusive, Thriving Communities Together

This document introduces the inspiring vision of Real Communities, a movement dedicated to empowering people with developmental disabilities to actively contribute to their local communities. It highlights the privilege of citizenship and the importance of collective action in creating stronger, more inclusive communities. Real Communities focuses on ensuring that people with developmental disabilities are not just participants but active members shaping their community’s direction and working alongside others to make it better for everyone.

The initiative is guided by four key commitments: fostering active participation, addressing local issues that matter to everyone, building long-term community capacity, and sharing lessons learned. Each commitment emphasizes learning—whether it’s discovering missing gifts, listening to diverse voices, strengthening alliances, or reflecting on shared experiences.

Real Communities draws on three foundational practices: Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) for community building, Person-Centered Support to uncover individual gifts, and Purposeful Learning to deepen understanding. Through workshops, retreats, and ongoing support, the initiative equips participants with the tools to create lasting change.

This document is a roadmap for anyone passionate about inclusive community building. It’s about moving beyond specilized responses to disability and embracing collective action that benefits everyone. Whether you’re a community builder, advocate, or simply curious, this is your chance to learn how Real Communities is transforming lives and neighborhoods through collaboration, creativity, and shared purpose. Dive in and discover how you can be part of this meaningful journey!
