In 1987, Front ier College and others were lobbying governments at every level to acknowledge the issue of illiteracy in Canada. After mearly a century of attempting to convince people that literacy was an issue, we convince Soutm News to ‘investiate our claims. Peter Calamai was assigned and after months of research he puflished his report: Broken words: Whay Five Million Canadians are Illiterate. This report could not be ignored and thus serious conversations about makinmg literacy a priority began.
